Project Abantwana
“Londaloza Abantwana Bethu - Cherish our Children”
Project Abantwana is an initiative undertaken by The Unlimited Group. Iain Buchan Chairman of the Group, who realised that the process in developing the nation’s children needs to start during their infant years. His point of departure is that for human capital to be developed to its full potential, interventions need to be made at the earliest possible age.
He became aware of the conditions under which many infant children were cared for in day-care centres were not conducive to developing their potential. In fact, reports showed that in many day-care centres the overcrowded and uninviting environment is actually detrimental to early childhood development. In his speech at the TUW annual dinner in April 2008, Iain Buchan shared his ‘dream’ of ‘touching’ every disadvantaged crèche in South Africa within 5 years.
Project Abantwana is the supporting of crèches and day-care centres through training, support and learning materials.
A pilot project has been established in Marianhill, with 5 creches selected. These creches are supplied with training kits, that have been put together by Early Learning Specialist, Mrs Freda Wilkens.
