Flying in the Face of Data

by tereztaylor on September 7, 2009

Winston the PigeonCompanies, schools, government, you, we, all use data communication via the internet every day. We google, blog, send emails, “facebook” each other, we’ve even started “tweeting”. But what we are really doing is communicating and learning from each other. We’re using innovation to innovate. We’re living in an information age and in order to stay up to date with the transfer of intellectual property (IP) and the fast pace of change thereof, we need the innovation of the internet protocol (also IP – coincidence?).

It has been theorized that in the corporate environment the speed of our innovation can be directly related to the speed of our internet connection. However, what is mildly disheartening, is the reliance over this transfer of communication, which for most companies is seen as mandatory. There is a steady belief that there is no other way to get a cheaper and more efficient form of data transfer than from the current offering available in South Africa … Right?

Maybe not! The Unlimited has done some extensive research on other methods to get 4GBs of information from one of our offices in Howick and transfer it to our Head Office in Hillcrest – approximately 70kms. We came across the lesser spotted internet protocol: IPoAC or CPIP, commonly known as Internet protocol over Avian Carrier or Carrier Pigeon Internet Protocol respectively.

At The Unlimited we know too well that Innovation means trying new things. But maybe it was just our gutsy passion for having fun in what we do, that set us on the wind currents to put pigeon against the internet - Columbidae livia domestica vs Asymmetric digital subscriber line;  Wing vs WAN.

The Unlimited has hired a high speed consultant, Winston, a top class racing pigeon from Gillits (just outside of Hillcrest). And on 9 September 2009 (090909), he will be transporting 4GBs of information in a micro-sd card and racing our 1mbps ADSL data line from Howick to Hillcrest.

Winston will depart Howick at 10am this Wednesday and is expected to arrive in Hillcrest at 11am. The outcome could go south, but we are hoping for a westerly wind to assist Winston in getting our data up the Hill and back home to bird seed before our ADSL line registers our cancellation of data request.

Informal caveat: Whilst conversing with Winston, he has corrected us by requesting us to call him a homey pigeon, we’ve been getting it wrong all along by calling him a homing pigeon!

6 Tips to Get Ahead in Your Career

by tereztaylor on August 25, 2009

Good luck to you, if you think your degree is going to earn you the top position in a growing corporation!

The South African corporate environment has become tougher, uncompromising and super competitive when it comes to skilled individuals on the career ladder. The new careerists of 2009 are ambitiously increasing their knowledge and skills with more viguor and speed than ever before.  Their urgency to get ahead will increase exponentially in the coming years. So please don’t hold your BComm, MBA et al. too close to your heart.

Yes, further education is very important, but at the end of the day my degree is on the same piece of paper given to about 8 million other South Africans battling it out for the top rung on the corporate ladder.

So how do you stand out? Zack Buchan, our CEO (our “top runger” if you will), certainly knows the answer. From the age of 30 he’s been leading The Unlimited towards consistent growth and success.

Zack shares his six tips to climbing the corporate ladder:
1. Work to Learn, don’t work to earn.
2. Surround yourself with great people.
3. Be the CEO in your job, at whatever level!
4. Make time to know yourself - what are your strengths and weaknesses?
5. Innovate by developing the habit to ask questions.
6. Never compromise your integrity!

Read more here as recently published in Destiny Man magazine.

DSA Personality of the Year - Our CEO Zack Buchan

by tereztaylor on July 23, 2009

The Direct Selling Association (DSA) recently held their annual awards at the Indaba Hotel, 15 July. As a member of the DSA, The Unlimited was there to attend and celebrate another year of successful partnership with the DSA.

Our CEO, Zack Buchan was recognised that day. He was awarded the DSA Personality of the Year.

If you know, or have spoken with Zack, you will most surely know 3 things:
1. He lives by a sense of urgency (in the sense that, if it can be done today, do it!)
2. He takes a firm stand on his values
3. And he knows how to have fun, and enjoy life.

Further to that he’s an exceptional business man. He has set strong targets for our Company. Some may say impossible. But last year, Zack steered The Unlimited to over-achieve by 64%.

And yet, he accepted the award with humility (shock and surprise he called it), because, entrenched in our culture is the drive to grow ever further. Awards may signify a moment or a past time of success, and recognition is something we all long for, but I say, don’t rate our CEO on this Award, watch this space, there are greater things to come!

No Financial Crisis Here!

by tereztaylor on April 20, 2009

All over you’ve been reading about financial downturn, retrenchments and possible recession! But The Unlimited Group is having none of this. This past financial year we over achieved our net profit target by 65%, and we are set to grow by 80-100% over the next year.

The Financial Mail recently wrote an article: “Judging by the behaviour of The Unlimited Group, one would think the financial crisis was a figment of the imagination.” Have a look…

So to me, as a member of the talented team at The Unlimited World, it looks like blue skies and sunny days are possible. I have no doubt that it will be challenging for all of us, but working for a company that has the belief that it is possible is refreshing and motivating.

Do you want to join our team? Or know someone who should?

Our CEO is giving R 10 000 if  someone you’ve referred is placed successfully for certain positions. So no financial crisis here!
